Prepped Up

Skin:  Belleza;  Aiko, pale 01
Hair:  Head Mistress;  Wind in the Willows, blonde 1
Shirt:  Young Urban;  Black Sweatervest
Skirt:  Grixdale;  Lazy denim skirt, smog, dark
Socks:  Kyoot;  Lacey white knee socks, 2
Shoes:  Enkythings;  Ekota, black
Necklace:  Twisted & Spoiled;  Rosary Necklace (from the Demon Hunter set)
Bracelets:  Shiny Things;  Hippie bracelet & Stoned bracelet, hematite

I almost always go for the bombshell look and that’s definitely reflected in my inventory wardrobe.  But every once in a while, I come across an item outside my normal fashion preferences and my brain immediately starts putting together an ensemble centered around that piece.  Such was the case with this cute sweater vest  and shirt combination from Young Urban. This is one of my favorite go-to outfits when I need something in a hurry.  Its a little catholic school girl and a lot preppy.

52 Weeks of Color Challenge: Celadon

Skin:  Belleza;  Aiko, pale 11
Hair:  LeLutka;  Knotted, sweeden
Eyes:  Leezu;  Deep Reflection Eyes, green
Tshirt:  Jane;  Layering Tee, celery
Long Sleeve Shirt:  Jane;  Sheer Layers, eucalyptus
Jeans:  Twisted & Spoiled;  T&S jeans, antique
Scarf:  Jane;  Floret tie, avocado
Jewelry:  League;  Wanderer bracelet & Miel;  Chum bracelet

Until this week’s color challenge, I had only heard “celadon” in reference to the beautiful jade-colored Chinese Song Dynasty pottery pieces.  It was a challenge to try to put together a look that would fittingly represent the stunning pieces I remember seeing.

Can I also say how much in love I am with this hair from LeLutka’s Hair Fair booth this year???  It comes with tattoo hair bases that specifically match each shade in the color pack.

As you can see, I’m still practicing with SL shadows.  I’ve found a few Windlight settings that seem to work well with my style.  I do alright against a studio backdrop, but they don’t seem to show as well when I go out into the wilds of a sim.

Finally Found: So Many Styles

Skin:  Belleza;  Aiko, pale 01
Hair:  Exile;  Caitrin, Vanilla roots
Dress:  So Many Styles;  Floral Tulip dress, blue
Shoes:  Pixel Mode;  Fae Wedge, Khaki
Necklace:  Miel;  Cue necklace
Bracelet:  Twisted & Spoiled;  ChiChi bangle

I actually first found So Many Styles a few weeks back when we did the “I Let My Boyfriend Dress Me” challenge.  Xan had chosen one of the skirts from there and I put it on my Places To Check Out list.

I was looking for something to wear Friday evening and went to my handy list.  After about an hour shopping there, I ended up with so many cute options to wear that I had trouble deciding on one.

The floral dress reminded me of some of the 80’s fashions I grew up with and it was a big hit with the boyfriend.

Escape from Risk City

I just recently saw on Marketplace that Khush has a new prop/pose set out called Fun With Cuffs that I just HAD to have.  I didn’t know what I would do with it yet, but I wanted to make sure I had it when the idea started forming.

It didn’t take long.

I’m a fan of Snake Plissken, the hero of John Carpenter’s Escape From New York and Escape from L.A.  As I was exploring the art sim, Risk City, I noticed that there were elements I could work with to create my own version.

The set includes four poses and four versions of the handcuffs to be used with each pose, which are very well-created.  I’ll certainly have to try to find Khush’s store in-world.  And what better to wear?  Twisted & Spoiled had the perfect outfit with their No Angel design.

Will I make my escape?  Will I make it out of those cuffs?  Will I even want to?

Aria Azul

I may have mentioned before that I love getting dressed up in formal-wear and going dancing, so when Xan suggested we do that last night, I was overjoyed.  Even moreso because I could wear the dress I had picked up at Culture Shock by Azul.

~Taken at Aria~

Skin:  Laqroki;  Nellie, Fair 07
Hair:  Exile;  Audrey, sahara
Dress:  Azul;  Laetitia, jade
Bracelet:  Twisted & Spoiled;  ChiChi Bangles (from the ChiChi set), bronze
Cheerno;  Bangles, gold (for The Fashion Garrett)
Earrings:  EarthStones;  Floating Circles, gold & diamond

Sim:  Originalia

I have been a long time fan of Mami Jewell, since before she opened her store and her gowns were available at Styles of Edo.  I still have several of her 2008 dresses that are still wearable (and gorgeous) even by today’s standards.  But this one tops them all by far and was simply stunning to wear and to see flow on the dancefloor.

There were only two very small, very fixable issues with the gown.  First, it does use a system skirt so you will need a skirt-version of your shape.  If you don’t have one, a notecard is provided in the folder on the guidelines you should follow when making yours.  The other issue was the little top jacket has a super-flexy prim around the back and every movement caused a huge gap of skin showing that prim adjustments wouldn’t fix.  Luckily (or maybe by design) it was modifiable and I was able to turn off the flexy on that one piece and solve my problem.

~Taken at The Docks~

If you happened to notice the backgrounds in these pictures, they were both taken at art installations sponsored by Originalia.  Once you land at the teleport point, turn away from the art gallery and follow the path down and to the right.  Follow the signs to The Docks and Aria and you’ll come to these simply breath-taking pieces of art that you can walk through.  My pictures and words can’t begin to do them justice, so you’ll just have to use the link and go visit them yourself.

Born to Be…Mild? Not Likely!

Skin:  Laqroki;  Phoebe2, Glow skin, Fair 02
Hair:  Truth;  Whitney, streaked sand
Shirt:  League;  Garage Shirt (Skull), Charcoal
Jeans:  League;  Garage Jeans, Cool Blue
Boots:  Drawmachine; Ladies Biker Boots Classic
Glove & Jewelry:  Twisted & Spoiled:  Glove & Buckle from Renegade in Black
Rockcandy;  Wristband, checkered red
Tattoo:  Para Designs;  Henna Beauty Tattoo, light

Bike:  HDCC;  2007 Boss, Mystica

I’ve had the yearning lately to dust off the vintage bike, roll out to a riding sim and feel the wind in my hair (and the bugs in my teeth) again.  No helmet laws in SL to worry about.  But I’m not sure the old girl is up to it anymore.  The BIKE, not ME!  I’m not ready for a Hoveround Scooter yet.

While she’s at the garage getting a check-up, I may start scouting around looking for a place with open roads and plenty of freedom.  Of course these places usually have bike shops and who knows, I may end up with a new one (or two).  But I have the clothes for it already, especially these super-cute jeans from League.  I drooled over these for several visits to the store, but always talked myself out of buying.  Don’t have to ask if my butt looks big in these, they’re just right and the prim bandana is color-change!!!  I’m definitely going back to buy more colors.

~~Oh, yeah, that’s right. That’s what’s it’s all about, all right. But talkin’ about it and bein’ it, that’s two different things. I mean, it’s real hard to be free when you are bought and sold in the marketplace. Of course, don’t ever tell anybody that they’re not free, ’cause then they’re gonna get real busy killin’ and maimin’ to prove to you that they are. Oh, yeah, they’re gonna talk to you, and talk to you, and talk to you about individual freedom. But they see a free individual, it’s gonna scare ’em. ~~from Easy Rider

Inner City

Skin:  Lara Hurley;  Leah, green gloss/pale
Hair:  Truth; Courtney, macaroon
Jacket:  Amerie;  S&S; Short Parka, pink
Shorts:  Fishy Strawberry;  Billy Denim shorts, black
Socks:  Twisted & Spoiled; Part of the Feisty in Black set
Boots:  GOS; Docs, 8 hole, pink, abused
***Disclaimer:  The boots pictured are actually a much lighter pink, not the darker pink I made them appear to match the hoodie***
Tattoo:  My Pinkie Skull;  Beauty Must Die, faded

I just love my new pink Docs!  I wanted to do a picture with them, but couldn’t seem to find anything in my inventory in a shade similar.  I wanted to get the picture done before SL started being naughty and crashing on me again, so I just threw on something in a darker pink and *made* the boots match through the magic of photo-shopping.  I know, bad girl.

A new friend of mine was curious about my Photoshop editing process and I wasn’t quite sure how to explain it and I’m really not the right person to attempt a blog tutorial.  But this will give anyone who’s curious a general idea of the steps I take.  One of the most important things to note is that there’s only so much you can do in Photoshop.  If you don’t start with a decent image, your finished product won’t be as good.  My personal favorite way to get a great starting image is NOT to use a facelight.  Use the preset WindLight settings (depending on which viewer your using):  Canimod, Exodi, or CalWL.  These will all result in a crisp, clear image as long as there aren’t any extra light sources in the vicinity.

The start of my process is the same for each one.  Firstly, I crop my image, removing any extraneous parts.  Then, if I’m using a green screen backdrop, I remove it and clean up any halo effects that may be left.  If you don’t know how to do this, there are already several good tutorials out there in blogs and on YouTube, just sharpen your Google skills and you’ll find plenty.  (I’m a trial and error type person, so I use the snapshot feature in the history panel frequently.  That way, I can always revert if I’ve done something I don’t like. )

Next step, I clean up the picture.  Using clone stamping, I fix any overt texturing errors, stray hairs sticking out of the body or prims that show awkwardly.  After that, I do probably THE most important step you’ll ever need to make smooth SL pictures:  Use the Liquify Tool!! With the avatar mesh in its current state, we all know about those jagged waists, necks and wrists, pointy elbows and knees and that strangeness of hexagonal boobs. Liquify can deal with all that and more and with practice will leave your pictures looking smooth and professional.  I’ll be honest, this tool scared the hell out of me when I first started using it, but Undo is your friend, experiment with brush size, do use the zoom feature, and practice, practice, practice.

At this point, each picture takes a different path.  I may use Dodge/Burn to bring out the highlights and shadows, add texturing or backdrops, create shadows behind the avatar, or start with any of the available adjustment layers (specifically:  curves, vibrance, hue/saturation).  Don’t be afraid to play with the layer blending styles, they can make a whole world of difference to the appearance of your image.  I also use the Filters menu quite a bit:  a little Gaussian blur, adding some noise or diffuse glow and unsharp masks.  It all depends on what that finished picture looks like in my mind and the steps I need to take to get it to that point.  Trying a feature, then reverting is the biggest portion of my editing process.  Finally, I go over any rough areas left with the smudge tool.

When I’m satisfied, I decide how I want to finish it.  Adding text, Beveled edges, colored matting, drop shadow or any of a number of options and finally, resizing.  You may want to resize in a couple different sizes, depending on whether the image will be used on the web or uploaded back into SL.  You may also want to save your picture in various formats:  JPEG, PNG, or TGA.

This layout shows the world of difference a few small editing steps can make to improve a raw shot straight out of SL.

I’m usually very critical when it comes to my own pictures and editing.  But sometimes, on rare occasions, when you’re putting together a look, setting the scene and doing post-processing, everything seems to fall into place effortlessly.

This week’s color was like a thunderbolt for me and I knew exactly how I wanted to style it.  What actually took me the longest, was finding the sim I wanted to use as a backdrop.  I loved the look as a whole and that’s why I listed what else I was wearing, though during editing I decided that cropping the picture was more effective in portraying the overall look I was going for.  By omitting my usual editing to the eyes, it came together exactly as planned for an indifferent, dead expression and gritty feel.

Music also helps me to get the mood right in a picture, so this week I’m going to share the playlist I used during editing:

“Hear Me Now” – Hollywood Undead
“Isolation” – Alter Bridge
“Not Strong Enough” – Apocalyptica ft. Brent Smith
“Lies of the Beautiful People” – Sixx AM
“Art of Dying” – Die Trying
“Last Man Standing” – Pop Evil
“Porn Star Dancing” – My Darkest Days w/ Ludacris, Chad Kroeger and Zakk Wylde
“The Animal” – Disturbed
“Say You’ll Haunt Me” – Stone Sour
“Fix Me” – 10 Years
“Country Song” – Seether
“Bad Company” – Five Finger Death Punch
“Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom) – Shinedown

On to next week’s challenge, Eggplant.  I have many purple options, but none that exact shade.  Yay!  Shopping!

Finally Found…Izzie’s and Al Vulo

Skin:  Al Vulo; Ninni, Fairy, Red
Hair:  Exile;  Oceane, whiskey
Eyes:  Exodi;  Riven Eyes, Grasshopper
Lashes:  Laqroki; Mascara 01, Black, Natural
Vest:  Izzie’s; Draped Vest, Blue
Shirt:  Twisted & Spoiled;  Vest, Neutral Pack, White
Skirt:  Maitreya;  Cleo Jean Skirt, Light Wash
Socks:  JANE;  Lil Piggies socks, rugby knee hi, Milk
Shoes:  Pixel Mode;  Baby T’s, Royal
Bracelets:  Frangiapani Designs;  Black Pearl & Silver Cuff (r) & Double Plait Bangle (l)

One of the things I love about the special/bargain lists that come out weekly is that I find creators that are new-to-me (even though they may have been around for years).  I haven’t lived under a fashion rock, but often I go gushing to a friend about some store I just ran across and they’re like, “Where you been, they’ve been around forever”.  *Sighs*

I’m not sure how long Izzie’s has been open, but I just finally found them from the Lazy Sunday list this past weekend.  The more I looked around, the more I wanted and I had to force myself to leave after buying a couple pieces or I would have bought out the whole store.  I love the rich texture on the vest and the way the bottom prims flow.  You can’t see the shoulders because of the hair, but there is some cute detailing there as well.

I also finally found Al Vulo skins.  They are beautifully done and less than a thousand Linden each, which *I* consider affordable.  Most of my SL life, I’ve favored skins with heavily-lined eyes with thick, black lashes, which seems to be a consistent feature  with these skins.  I decided to go all-out with the one I selected and chose a red lip (unusual for me).
